With Tehran being my first layover, I look forward to shopping for the maps and some books there. Could you please advise decent places (i.e. with wide assortment) - stores, shops, bazaar areas - that sell maps of Iran and its cities, preferably English ones, and/or books in literature, history, arts?

The best place for buying books is Enghelab Street, right in front of Tehran University. There are plenty of bookstores. Near Karimkhan bridge in Karimkhan Street are also some bookstores in which you can find good books about Iran. Gitashenasi publishing has English version of maps.
