Question:
I would heartfully appreciate receiving any information relating to the border crossing, road travels between Mary Turkmenistand and Iran. What is the easiest way to cross the Iranian border by road from Turkmenistan, while being dumped in Mary. We were told that we can take the road (bus I guess) from Mary (in a day) to the border town of Saraghs. We will than continue to Mashad.
Answer:
Sarakhs town was once a stopping point along the Silk Road, and in its 11th century heyday had many libraries and a famous school of architects. Much of the original city site is now just across the border at Saraghs in Turkmenistan.
Mashad to Sarakhs is 185 km by road and 120 km by train. The border post from Sarakhas and Saraghs are open from 8am to 5pm. No transport goes right across the border, so once through the immigration on the Iranian side get a shuttle (about IR4000) to the Turkmen Immigration post. From there once immigration formalities are complete buses and shared taxis run occasionally to Mary (3 or 4 hours) or Ashgabat (6 hours) from the bus/train station, though transport slows later in the afternoon.
