Question:
What happens if one overstays the VOA (visa on arrival) in Iran? The airline I plan to use only flies there once a week and if i get the return flight two weeks later, I'd have stayed for 15 days, which is one day after VOA expires.
Answer:
If you exit Iran later than the expiration date of your visa, at least you will be asked to pay about $50 as a penalty per day. So you should extend your visa a few days before the expiration. For Iran visa fill in the visa form on Iran visa invitation letter application page, and it takes about 10 days to get your reference number and two working days to collect your visa at the embassy by direct referral or one working week by posting the docs to the embassy. You can also get your visa on arrival by having the electronic Iran visa invitation letter sent to you by your local travel agency. You can pay the visa fee on arrival in cash in Iran and it is different from what you pay for the visa authorization letter to the Iranian travel agency. At the moment some nationalities including Americans, Canadians and the British have to book a tour and cannot visit Iran on their own.
